Viroqua Youth Initiative High School bests Chicago Waldorf 31 to 28 (—by Weekender sports correspondent Vince Hundt) Like every good Waldorf school event, this one started with a song. As officials Adrian Ugo and Shawn Lavoie were about to blow the whistle to start the game, someone shouted from the stands ," What about the national anthem?" Spontaneously hats came off and the estimated crowd of 250 produced a strong and rousing rendition of our national anthem. "That is the first time I ever saw a crowd pull that off." said La Farge varsity baseball and JV basketball coach Blake Herken. " I've heard people try it before but it only gets as far as, Oh ho say can you see .... and then it peters out. That sounded great! I was impressed." What was not impressive was the shooting in the first of four 8 minute periods of the game by both teams. "Although we've practiced and scrimmaged a lot this was the first official game for our team and the kids were kinda tight and nervous. But they got over it." said YIHS head coach Lars Bergan. The YIHS team managed just 6 points in the first period and The Chicago Waldorf High School team only 2. Youth Initiative High School students have been participating in hockey, baseball, soccer and basketball in cooperation with local public schools and The Christian Academy school for the last 8 years but this is the first YIHS sponsored athletic team fielded in the schools 11 year history. At times it showed. This game seemed to affirm what students learn in biology about "phyloginy recapitulating androgyny". Like the schools own history, this game started a little lumpy but got much much better as it moved along. In the second period Chicago went on a 7 point run answered by 2 point baskets by Anna Chotzen and Walker Willis . The shooting percentages were still low for both teams throughout the period but the momentum belonged to Chicago at the half with the score 14-10 Chicago. During the period YIHS tried to figure out the 3-2 zone defense so artfully executed by the eurythmists from the Windy City. The twenty-two visiting students from the Chicago Waldorf High School are in town to present 2 eurythmy performances with a basketball game thrown in just for the joie de vivre. Eurythmy is a movement/dance/theater discipline that is an integral part of the Waldorf curriculum which suggests that “ all learning begins with movement”. It helps students understand principles and concepts of physiology, psychology and theology … and basketball. The half time show consisted of a slam dunk contest put on by the two fading basketball stars and part time officials Shawn and Adrian. Although they failed to execute that perfect twirling two handed reverse slam the crowd was in a festive mood and were humored watching two grown men at play. The second part of this game was all basketball and all defense. Gabe Chotzen and Ben Brooke, two Viroqua 8th graders, and Sirsha Erickson of YIHS joined the Chicago team to add some muscle and outside shooting, while both teams began to press with the tempo of the game picking up dramatically. Blocked shots and stolen passes kept the ball moving up and down the court frequently. Between Zack Wickert developing a hot hand and a long 2 pointer by Talia Winningham the third period ended with the game up for grabs 19-18 Viroqua. The final period saw the two teams ratchet up the intensity one more notch with Chicago nailing two 3 pointers and causing some aggressive nail biting in the home town crowd. Foul shots by Wickert, Hundt, and Caleb Whited-Ford resulted in a matching 6 points, and with the clock at 2 minutes and winding down the crowd was on it's feet as the teams traded baskets and the lead. With YIHS trailing by one and 30 seconds left, Walker Willis hit a lay-up to put them ahead for good, 29-28. Winningham hit another two-pointer in the waning seconds to close the scoring with a final of 31-28. An exuberant crowd gave a standing ovation to both teams and a robust thank you to Principal Jack Sulik of La Farge High School for generously permitting the game to happen in his gym. Everyone in the building expressed hope that there will be more occasions to improve the shot percentage and to perfect the song.
