Genetics and Biotechnology

Grade 12

December 4-22, 2006

Instructor: Vicki Ramsay

Genetics and Biotechnology comprise an exponentially-growing sphere of science.  With the rapid advancement of technology, people are forced to keep pace intellectually and ethically.  This course will be comprised of investigations into the multiple realms of genetics and biotechnology including cell biology, DNA studies, laboratory experiments and bioethics.  We will begin with a review of the cell, its structure, organelles and functions.  Next we will study the processes of cell division and gamete formation (mitosis and meiosis), and the flow and regulation of genetic information between DNA, RNA, and protein molecules.  In considering these processes, students will form an understanding of the factors responsible for inheritance, genetic variability and biodiversity.  In order to deepen their knowledge of the abstract nature of molecular genetics, students will create original models of the double-helix chemical structure of DNA.  Laboratory exercises will include DNA extraction and the colonizing of transgenic bacteria.  Students will engage in weekly discussions of contemporary bioethical issues on topics of their choice.
