Overview

All life on earth is made mostly of water and we live in a world where water dominates climate and many other features of the environment. Since ancient times civilizations have prospered or faltered in response to water’s availability. Roughly the same amount of water exists on Earth today as when it first formed on the planet. How can we satisfy human needs while protecting this precious resource? How can we balance our need to use water with our responsibility for its quality and availability?

In this block we will explore the many aspects of water from its physical and chemical properties, to its integral role in Earth’s systems, to it’s importance as a natural resource and the historical and contemporary complexities of its use and misuse. Using hands-on activities and experiments we’ll hypothesize, explore, and answer questions about water and water related issues.
